- Dr. John Leander Po is originally from Toronto, Ontario Canada. After completing his Bachelor and Master of Science from McGill University in Montreal, he continued his studies at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he received both M.D. and Ph.D (Cell and Molecular Biology) degrees. Dr. Po's thesis involved characterizing influenza-specific pulmonary CD8+ cytotoxic T cell responses in ageing using a mouse model.
Dr. Po continued his internship and residency in internal medicine at Boston University Medical Center and continued on with the subspecialty of infectious diseases (ID) in the same institution, with additional training in transplant ID at the Massachusetts General Hospital. During fellowship training, Dr. Po was mentored by Dr. Philip C. Carling, who conducted seminal work on antimicrobial stewardship and opened up a new field of research on the role of the environment in healthcare acquired infections.
Upon completion of his training in 2008, Dr. Po became an ID consultant and Infection Control officer at a suburban community hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. He also served as the President of the Arizona Infectious Diseases Society.
In 2013, Dr. Po served as a volunteer physician, providing victims of Super-typhoon Haiyan, in the Philippines. In April 2014, he continues to see patients at the Petersen Clinic, and serves as clinical associate professor of Medicine and the ID Fellowship Program Director for the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson, AZ.
