    John (Jack) Handelsman obtained his undergraduate degree at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Subsequent Orthopaedic training was at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford and the Royal Victoria Hospital of McGill University in Montréal. At that time, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, London (FRCS). He obtained a Masters Degree in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Liverpool (MCh Orth), during a Fellowship year at the Alder Hay Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.

    Subsequently, over a 25-year period, he directed the Pediatric Orthopaedic Clinical and Residency Programs at three teaching centers in the USA. These were
    Stony Brook University, Long Island, New York - 5 years
    Rhode Island Hospital and Brown University, Providence - 5 years
    Schneider Children’s Hospital of Northwell Health, New York -15 years, where he also served as Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery.
    John was very enthusiastic about exposing pediatricians to pediatric orthopaedics, and during that time, organized 30 annual CME programs on children’s musculo-skeletal problems.

    Research interests and publications include peripheral deformities, muscle abnormalities in clubfoot, hemophilic arthritis, CP and neuromuscular diseases, pediatric hip problems, fractures in children and child abuse.

    He remains clinically and academically active at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, New York.
