  • J. Thomas Cox, M.D (Tom) is an OB/GYN expert on human papillomavirus (HPV) and on the clinical management of women with abnormal cervical cytology and HPV-induced precancer and past-President of the ASCCP. Following an OB/GYN practice he became the Director of the Gynecology and Colposcopy Clinic at the University of California Santa Barbara. In 1992 he demonstrated that testing for HPV might help manage women with cervical cytology read as ASCUS. In 1994 he became Chair of the ASCCP Practice Committee, which wrote the first ASCCP Guidelines for the management of women with abnormal cervical cytology and subsequently led to the 2001 ASCCP National Consensus Conference that established the ASCCP as the international leader in this arena. He has testified before Congress twice as an expert on HPV and has served on many national committees including every Gardasil HPV Vaccine DSMB since 2002, multiple ACS expert advisory boards on HPV and gynecologic cancer, and on the Bureau of Primary Health Care Cancer Experts Advisory Panel. He also was the CMO of ASHA’s National HPV and Cervical Cancer Prevention Resource Center, instituting a national program in 1999 to educate the public about HPV. He was Associate Editor of the JLGTD for 17 yrs. He has authored or coauthored over 80 peer reviewed articles, and coauthored/coedited Modern Colposcopy. Since 2018 he has been working with Antiva Biosciences as a Medical Consultant. Dr. Cox was awarded the 2003 European Research Organization in Genital Neoplasia (EUROGIN) Recognition and Distinguished Service Award for outstanding scientific achievements in HPV infection and dedication to research in the field of cervical neoplasia, and in 2011 was its Honorary Co-President for the 2011 International Conference. In 2023 Dr. Cox received the ASCCP Lifetime Achievement Award. He received his BS in Pre-Med from the University of Oregon in 1968, his MD from Baylor College of Medicine in 1972 and his residency in OB/GYN from Kaiser SF.
