He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine in 1988 and completed his psychiatry residency at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY. Following his years at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, including serving as the Blanche F. Ittleson Professor, he was appointed inaugural system chief of Behavioral and Mental Health at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, and Professor of Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Genetics at Emory University in 2022. His research focuses on health system transformation in the care of children at risk for enduring mental health conditions, with a special emphasis on the causes and prevention of disorders of social development in childhood. His published works are recognized in major journals in psychiatry, behavioral neuroscience, and autism, and he is the author of the Social Responsiveness Scale, a clinical and research standard for the measurement of autism-related traits over the life course. Dr. Constantino’s commitment to child and adolescent psychiatry has been acknowledged through several honors, including the George Tarjan Award and the Irving Philips Award for Prevention by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He was awarded the Ruane Prize for outstanding scientific contributions to the field of child psychiatry in 2024 by the Brain and Behavioral Research Foundation.
