- Johannes Bonatti, MD is a cardiac surgeon and professor of cardiothoracic surgery at the Heart and Vascular Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. He is an adult cardiac surgeon with a special focus is minimally invasive and robotic heart surgery. Using these techniques he performs mitral valve surgery, coronary bypass surgery, and various other robotically assisted procedures.
Before joining UPMC he worked at the Krankenhaus Nord - Klinik Floridsdorf of the Gesundheitsverbund Wien (Vienna Health Network) in Vienna, Austria (2019 to 2021)
He was chief of the department of cardio-thoracic Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates from 2012 to 2015 and served as the chairman of the Heart & Vascular Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi from 2015 - 2018. During the same time he was also staff surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic main campus in Cleveland, Ohio, USA and clinical professor of surgery at the Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University.
Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Bonatti was director of coronary surgery & advanced coronary interventions and professor of surgery at the University of Maryland, Baltimore in the US.
As a pioneer in the field of cardiothoracic surgery, in 2012 Dr. Bonatti performed the world’s first robotic endoscopic quadruple coronary bypass surgery and has completed 5000 + heart surgeries – including more than 750 robotic procedures. He served as the President of the Minimally Invasive Robotics Association (MIRA) from 2011-2012 and as President of the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS) in the 2017/2018 term.
He has published >250 papers and has given multiple scientific talks at respected meetings around the world.
