  • Dr. Joao Paulo Almeida, MD, PhD, joined IU in November 2024 as the Robert L. Campbell Endowed Scholar and Associate Professor, Co-Director of the IU Skull Base Surgery Program, and Director of Pituitary Surgery at the Department of Neurosurgery at Indiana University (IU).

    After completing his medical training in Brazil, he pursued clinical fellowship training in neuro-surgical oncology, skull base and cerebrovascular surgery at the University of Toronto and the Cleveland Clinic. From 2021 to 2024, Dr. Almeida served as Assistant Professor/Associate Surgeon at Mayo Clinic Florida, where he focused on neuro-oncology and skull base surgery. He also led the Microsurgical Anatomy Research Fellowship at the Skull Base Lab at Mayo Clinic Florida, a surgical lab he helped establish.

    An accomplished researcher and educator, Dr. Almeida has authored over 110 peer-reviewed papers and 30 book chapters. In addition, he has served as director of neurosurgical courses in North and South America and active speaker in national and international events, with over 100 presentations around the globe. His research primarily centers on pituitary and skull base tumors, neuro-oncology, and microsurgical anatomy. He also serves as a reviewer and editorial board member for several prestigious scientific journals.

    At Indiana University, Dr. Almeida is driving several projects. He is developing and directing the Microneurosurgical and Endoscopic Skull Base Anatomy Lab, a new facility focused on advancing research and training in skull base surgery. Additionally, he is Co-Director of the upcoming IU Neurosurgery and ENT Skill Lab, set to open in late 2025. This multidisciplinary lab will focus enhancing procedural skills using cutting-edge training technologies. Dr. Almeida is also leading innovative research research projects aimed at improving clinical care in pituitary surgery and exploring the use of virtual reality and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance skull base surgery.
