Summary
- I specialize in caring for working-age people with stalled or poor recoveries from illness or injury. They have failed to heal satisfactorily despite a lot of medical care and the passage of time. A typical patient has persistent pain or other distressing subjective symptoms along with significant disruption of their daily lives, including prolonged work disability. Some feel stuck in limbo and keep seeking care because they are still looking for relief or a cure. Others have been told they learn to live successfully with whatever has happened, but don't know how.
I see patients by referral only, and deliver all care virtually. After the first visit, all care must be pre-authorized. The main goal is to shift their view of their role in their predicament, to strengthen their inner drive and give them the skills required to adhere to treatment and optimize their total life outcome. I focus them on doing what is required to restore a fulfilling and satisfying everyday life, and find their way out of the healthcare system as well as the disability benefits system (if applicable).
I become my patients’ champion and companion during recovery. The first step is evaluating the obstacles to healing/recovery in the person’s entire situation, not just body or mind. I then create, deliver, and orchestrate a time-limited multi-dimensional plan of care for the whole person. Typically this plan includes medical and mental health treatment, education on health, pain, and recovery topics, instruction in self-care and self-management, goal-setting, future planning, as well financial and career counseling. As much as possible, I collaborate with other involved health professionals. When that is not possible, my patients are directed to internet resources.
