Summary
- Jeffrey Nadel, M.D., M.S. is serving as a 2022-2023 White House Fellow. Most recently a resident neurosurgeon at the University of Utah, he is passionately focused on reducing health disparities and effecting change in the way we deliver surgical services to at-risk communities. All of Dr. Nadel's academic work is aimed at improving health equity around the globe.
Dr. Nadel has published more than three-dozen research papers, book chapters, and popular press articles on topics across the biomedical spectrum, including translational brain research, clinical and health services research, international public health, and health economics and policy. His work has taken him to Latin America and Africa to build research and social infrastructure to reduce disparities. This includes the development of a global surgical equity research collaboration with a regional referral hospital in Mbarara, Uganda, and the founding of an adult literacy program in rural Costa Rica that now operates nationwide. Domestically, he co-directed a free clinic in a local homeless shelter and helped lead an effort to fund community health workers in underserved neighborhoods across Detroit. He previously worked as a translational brain researcher at the National Institutes of Health and in a health economics and policy research role at The Brookings Institution.
He earned his M.D. and M.S. from the University of Michigan as a Dean’s Merit Scholar, with academic honors, distinction in research, and with elections to the Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism Honor Societies. He also graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Colorado College with a B.A. in Neuroscience and minors in Latin American Studies and Biochemistry, where he was a Rhodes Scholarship finalist, a Boettcher Scholar, and captain of the varsity swim team.
