Summary
- Jeffrey A. Lieberman, M.D. is Professor and the Constance and Stephen Lieber Chair of Psychiatry at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Throughout his 40 year career he has focused on research, clinical care of patients with serious mental illness, influencing government and social policy, educating health care providers and the general public and reducing stigma. Dr. Lieberman's research on the neurobiology, pharmacology and treatment of schizophrenia and psychotic disorders has transformed our understanding of the causes and advanced the treatment of mental illness. He has authored or co-authored over 800 articles published in scientific literature and wrote or edited 17 books on mental illness and psychiatry and is the recipient of many awards including the Lieber Prize for Schizophrenia Research from NARSAD, the Adolph Meyer Award from the APA the Research Award from the NAMI among many others. Dr. Lieberman has been a member of the Advisory committee for Neuropharmacologic and Psychopharmacologic Drugs of the FDA, the Planning Board for the Surgeon General's Report on Mental Health, the Committee on Research on Psychiatric Treatments of the APA, and the APA Work Group for the Development of Schizophrenia Treatment Guidelines.
In 2000 he was elected to the National Academy of Medicine, in 2010 fellowship in the AAAS and in 2021 named to the New York Power 50 in Mental Health. He served as President of the APA in 2013 and 2014.
His work extended beyond biomedical research and clinical psychiatry to public policy for mental health care and diminishing the stigma of mental illness. This motivated him to write the critically acclaimed book Shrinks: The Untold Story of Psychiatry. A 4 part series, Mysteries of Mental Illness, based on his book was nationally broadcast on PBS June 22 and 24, 2022.
His new book, Malady of the Mind: Schizophrenia and the Path to Prevention was published by Scribner's of Simon and Shuster in February 2023.
