Summary
- I am a Board Certified cardiologist who for several years chaired the Department of Medicine and the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, as well as The Howard Gilman Institute for Heart Valve Disease and the Schiavone Institute for Cardiovascular Translational Research at the State University of New York Downstate Medical University (University Hospital of Brooklyn), the latter 2 of which I continue to lead. In addition, I have maintained my appointment at Weill Cornell Medicine-New York Presbyterian Hospital, where I am Adjunct Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine in Cardiothoracic Surgery. In additional to providing clinical service in general cardiology, valve disease and heart failure, and teaching in the medical college, I direct a research program, primarily in valve disease and heart failure and drug development, and have published more than 500 articles and chapters and 8 books. I have been an Adviser to the USFDA for 42 years (with 4 terms as Chair of Advisory Committees), was an Adviser to NASA for 24 years, was founding President of the Heart Valve Society of America (now amalgamated into the Heart Valve Society [international] of which I am a Trustee), and have received numerous awards and other recognitions.
