Summary
- At the outset of my career, I served over ten years as a faculty member, then Assistant Program Director of an Internal Medicine Residency Program. This role allowed me to care for patients in an office-based practice, and manage in-hospital patients as head of a medical team, while actively and constantly educating physicians-in-training. My teaching manner earned me the honor of being named "Outstanding Teacher of the Year." I chaired the Medical Education Committee, which was committed broadly to curriculum development and specifically to safe transitions of care during my leadership. Throughout my academic medicine affiliation, I was an enthusiastic advocate for the residents and a dedicated mentor, and I honed the valuable skill of managing diverse personality types and learning styles. After leaving the teaching role, I brought the instinct for advocacy to patients who experience disparities in health care access or outcomes. As medical director of a program for all-inclusive care for the elderly, I took care of medically complex, socially disenfranchised and often financially impoverished older patients, and worked with a team to find creative solutions to keep them at home over being institutionalized; as a VA physician, I took special interest in addressing chronic pain with a multi-dimensional approach; and currently, as the interim medical director at an occupational health clinic, which sees a large proportion of factory workers, I emphasize the importance of injury prevention and I push back against the cynicism that often clouds workman's compensation cases, so that my patients will receive the necessary care to heal properly. I enjoy, and am particularly able, to communicate health-related information clearly and compellingly to learners, to other healthcare providers, and to patients.
