- James Zenel, M.D., graduated from the Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his psychiatric residency at the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, University of Maryland. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Zenel currently holds a position as a staff psychiatrist for the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital in Tampa, FL. In that role, he sits on the Quality of Care Committee for the Hospital’s Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences Service. Among his other ongoing duties is clinical supervision of a doctoral level psychiatric pharmacist and a psychiatric advanced practice registered nurse. Dr. Zenel is also the psychiatric consultant to the Pasco County Vet Center. He is a Certified Mentor at the national level, VA Mentor Certification Program.
Dr. Zenel is an Assistant Professor at the University of South Florida, Morsani College of Medicine. In this capacity he has served as a clinical supervisor to post-graduate psychiatric residents in training.
Since 2015, Dr. Zenel has been a gubernatorial appointee to the Medicaid Pharmaceutical and Therapeutics Committee (Florida Agency for Health Care Administration). He is a former member of the Medicaid Drug Utilization Review Board, Florida AHCA. Pre-COVID, he conducted in-the-field physician to physician Medicaid record reviews as a Quality of Care Review Specialist for the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute at the University of South Florida. Dr. Zenel is a long-time member of the Expert Panels for the Florida Best Practice Psychotherapeutic Medication Guidelines for Adults, which expects to publish updated treatment guidelines in 2023.
