- Dr. James Sanders is an orthopaedic surgeon located in Chapel Hill, NC, specializing in pediatric orthopedics. He completed his medical education at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1986, followed by a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, and a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedics at the University of Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. He started his career in San Antonio with Pediatric Orthopaedics of San Antonio with his senior partners Kaye Wilkins and Earl Stanley in 1992. He served as Chief of Staff of Shriners Hospitals for Children in Erie, PA from 1997 through 2007. From 2008 to 2019, he was a professor of orthopaedics and pediatrics at the University of Rochester and the Golisano Children's Hospital. Since 2019 through the present, he serves as the Frank C. Wilson Distinguished Profess and Chair of Orthopaedics at UNC Chapel Hill. Dr. Sanders is experienced spinal deformity care and surgery, limb lengthening, and pediatric orthopaedics. His publications cover topics like spinal growth and skeletal maturity, and he has been published in reputable journals and is know for development of a skeletal maturity staging system used commonly in scoliosis care. He has been a visiting professor at numerous institutions of higher learning.
