Summary
- I am a board certified cardiologist working in the Watkins Clinic of the Shapiro Cardiovascular Center at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, a teaching hospital of the Harvard Medical School.
My cardiovascular research has centered on the need for better understanding of the pathophysiology of onset of acute coronary syndromes. This work began in 1985 with studies of circadian variation and triggering of coronary events.
In 1989 with Drs Peter Stone and Geoffrey Tofler, it was proposed that vulnerable coronary plaques might be identified as a means to improve prevention.
In 1999 I co-founded Infraredx, Inc to build an intracoronary NIR spectroscopy catheter to identify lipid-rich coronary plaques. In 2005, I resigned from my position as Professor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School to serve as CEO of Infraredx to complete construction of the device and initiate clinical studies.
In 2015, Infraredx was acquired by Nipro, Inc and I returned to the practice of cardiology after re-training and examination.
In April, 2019 the US FDA approved the NIRS coronary catheter for the identification of high risk coronary patients and plaques.
The Infraredx NIRS-IVUS catheter is currently under evaluation in a second large outcome study in Scandinavia for its ability to identify vulnerable plaques and vulnerable patients.
In other activities, in 1980 I was one of 3 American co-founders of International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear (IPPNW), the organization awarded the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize. In 2007 IPPNW co-founded the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, which was awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize.
In 2002 I served as founding president of Voice of the Faithful, a world-wide organization seeking to increase the voice of the Catholic laity as a means to prevent the abuse of children by priests and cover-up of the crimes by church leaders.
