- James Meschia, MD, FAAN, FAHA, FANA is a Vascular Neurologist in the Cerebrovascular Division of the Department of Neurology in Mayo Clinic in Florida. He is board certified n Neurology and Vascular Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Dr. Meschia's clinical expertise includes management of symptomatic and asymptomatic carotid disease, cerebral small vessel disease, and inherited stroke disorders, including CADASIL, CARASIL, and Fabry disease.
Dr. Meschia earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Columbia University in New York and his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed his neurology residency at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and his Vascular Neurology fellowship at Indiana University in Indianapolis. He then joined the faculty at Mayo Clinic in Florida where he founded the first accredited stroke center in the Mayo Clinic system and served as Chair for 9 years.
Dr. Meschia's research focuses on management of atherosclerotic carotid stenosis, primary prevention of stroke, and inherited stroke syndromes. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the CREST trial and is co-Principal Investigator of the CREST-2 trial of intensive medical therapy with or without carotid revascularization. He has served as chair of the Writing Group for the American Heart Association's Primary Prevention of Stroke Guidelines and Chair of the AHA Scientific Statement on inherited small vessel diseases. He currently serves as Chair of the Personnel Committee for the Mayo Clinic in Florida.
