- Dr. James Amster is a retired radiologist who practiced in the Long Beach medical community for over 40 years.
He was an intern and resident at Long Beach Memorial Med Center in 1981 as part of his internship and residency at UCU Medical Center. He graduated from Princeton University in Chemistry Magna Cum Laude in 1977, the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1981. Dr. Amster completed a four year Internship and Radiology Residency at UCI Medical Center and wa Chief Resident in 1984-1985. He went on to attend Cornell Medical Center- The New York Hospital- Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center as a 2 year Neuroradiology Fellow, July1985- June1987.
Dr. Amster worked at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center as head of Neuroradiology section for 14 years.
Dr. Amster specialized primarily in Neuroradiology, and in particular in Spine Radiology, having learned from and worked closely with Leon Wiltse, M.D., a pioneer in Orthopedic Spine Surgery, world renowned and professionally respected, in daily clinical practice for over 20 years.
In 2004, Dr. Amster and his then wife and radiologist partner opened an outpatient practice at Liberty Pacific Medical Imaging in Signal Hill, CA.
Dr. Amster specialized in advice for clinicians and patients in imaging evaluation and enjoys helping the uneducated, underserved and those who have been left behind.
Dr. Amster had been inspired since he was a child by his grandfather, Dr. J. Lewis Amster, prominent General Surgeon in the Bronx in the 20th century, dedicating his life to the the less fortunate and served briefly as the Health Commissioner of New York City in 1981, resigning because of the Mayor's pressure to do what Dr. Amster was not in the public's best interest.
Despite having been an orphan since age 8, Dr. Amster’s determination and resilience and inspiration from his grandfather enabled him to pursue his dream of a career helping patients.
