  • Jacob G. Calcei, MD is a fellowship-trained orthopedic sports medicine physician and shoulder surgeon at University Hospitals and an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He specializes in the treatment of acute injuries and chronic conditions of the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and ankle.

    As an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Calcei teaches and mentors medical students, residents and fellows. He has authored a number of peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters and has research interests in cartilage preservation and restoration and the use of biologics in treating sports medicine injuries and early arthritis. He also has a particular interest in injury prevention and finding ways that we can make sports safer while optimizing athlete performance.

    Dr. Calcei graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Kenyon College where he was an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Baseball Team player. He went on to earn his medical doctorate with honors in orthopedic surgery and cell biology from New York University School of Medicine. Dr. Calcei completed his orthopedic surgery residency training at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, the #1 ranked orthopedic surgery hospital and residency program in the country. He then traveled to northern California for a fellowship in sports medicine orthopedic surgery at Stanford University.

    Dr. Calcei has served as a team physician at all levels of competition. Throughout his training, he served as a team physician for FDNY Bravest Football and Curtis and Lafayette High Schools in New York City, Sacred Heart Schools in Atherton, Stanford University athletics and the NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers.
