Summary

  • I am Emeritus Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University and Emeritus Director of the William T Dahms MD Clinical Research Unit and Clinical Hypertension Program at University Hospitals Case Medical Center. I received both my MD and PhD (Pharmacology) from the University of Pittsburgh and Internal Medicine residency at the University of Michigan. I have over 300 publications and served on many national and international advisory panels.

My research experience includes having had a major or leadership role in nearly all of the major clinical outcome trials conducted in Black populations over the past three decades. These include Vice Chair of the Steering Committee for the NIH-sponsored African American Study of Kidney Disease in Hypertensives Trial (AASK) and serving as first author of its primary results paper. I also served as Chair of the Executive Committee and Vice Chair of the Steering Committee for the largest study of hypertension treatment ever completed, (ALLHAT with more than 42,000 participants and more than 15,000 Blacks) and lead author on the primary results paper. In addition to identifying the most effect medications to prevent the complications of hypertension, this study demonstrated the feasibility and importance of recruiting and retaining large numbers of minorities into clinical trials. Most recently, I led the NEJM paper reporting the results of the SPRINT trial with over 9,200 participants) documenting the benefit of treating patients to a SBP of < 120 mmHg compared treatment to the usually recommended < 140 mmHg in reducing cardiovascular events and mortality. I was selected as an author on the last four US national hypertension guidelines including the most recent guideline which redefined the blood pressure level for the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension.
