- Dr. J. Brian Szender is a gynecologic oncologist in practice with the START Center, treating women with cancer of the lower reproductive tract. Dr. Szender received both a B.S. and M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Boston University. He completed medical school at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska and then attended the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio for his residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology.
While he was a resident, Dr. Szender was recognized as the only two time winner of ACOG's Donald F. Richardson Memorial Prize Paper. Dr. Szender left Texas to complete his fellowship training in Gynecologic Oncology at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y. During his time in Buffalo, Dr. Szender was trained in gynecologic cancer surgery, including management of disease in the upper abdomen, as well as prescribing patients with chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and immunotherapy. Dr. Szender also earned a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, with a concentration in epidemiology, and he helped manage patients on multiple clinical trials.
With the breadth of education and experience Dr. Szender gained in his fellowship, he participated in numerous research projects with a particular interest in surgical quality improvement and novel therapeutic options for patients. In 2017, Dr. Szender joined the START Center for Cancer Care. His practice encompasses the full spectrum of gynecologic cancer care, including minimally invasive and robotic surgery, upper abdominal surgery, prescription of chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and immunotherapy, as well as participation in clinical trials. Dr. Szender is a Junior Fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a member of both the Wellness and the Policy, Quality, and Outcomes task forces with the Society of Gynecologic Oncology.
