Summary
- I am an academic hospitalist at UCSD with interests in quality improvement, patient safety, and medical education. Quality projects have covered communication, VTE prevention, anticoagulation safety, PPI overuse, stethoscope hygiene, and alcohol withdrawal. I have mentored numerous hospitals in VTE prevention and CAUTI safety, many through SHM's mentored implementation program and its involvement with OntheCUSP. I codirected the 2013 Quality precourse for the SHM annual meeting, which focused on the Choosing Wisely campaign.
Invited presentations have included VTE prevention and management, contrast nephropathy, anticoagulation (including quality and safety, reversal, and novel agents), cost and quality, sepsis, team work and communication, negotiation, and several topics to support the OntheCUSP stop CAUTI initiative.
In addition to resident education, I co-direct the UCSD school of medicine preinternship class, which is a month-long class that combines small group learning with didactics. I created and delivered a mini-quality and safety curriculum in the course starting in 2014.
Committee work includes Pharmacy and Therapeutics and the anticoagulation subcommittee, and Patient Safety at UCSD. At SHM, I serve on the Education and Health Quality and Patient Safety Committees.
