  • Dr. Hugo R. Martinez is an Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, College of Medicine, Division of Pediatric Cardiology and Genetics. In addition, he has been appointed as a Consulting Physician for the Cardio-Oncology Service at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

    Clinically, as a faculty member of the Advanced Heart Failure Program at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, he has participated in the medical care of patients who have required cardiac transplantation and artificial circulation via ventricular assist devices. He is also the Director of the Cardiovascular Genetics service which offers essential information on establishing diagnoses of heritable cardiovascular disease, identifies at-risk family members, and offers potential insight into long-term prognosis. As a Consulting Physician at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, he has developed preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic strategies for children and adult patients with cancer who become susceptible to premature cardiovascular disease.

    At all these institutions he is at the forefront of publishing new research related to cardiovascular disease. Dr. Martinez’s research interests include gene discovery for various forms of cardiovascular disease, modalities of mechanical circulatory support, cardio-oncology, and novel drug investigation in heart failure. He has authored over 30 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 8 book chapters, and has delivered over 50 lectures nationally and internationally.
