Summary

• Dr. Harvey Jones is a pathologist based in Chapel Hill, NC, specializing in both anatomic and clinical pathology. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine in 1966 and completed his pathology residency and internship at the Naval Regional Medical Center. Following 9 years of Naval duty spanning the Vietnam conflict and motivated by a desire to share his efforts with a community in need, he settled in Henderson, NC where he founded a small community hospital pathology practice which eventually grew to serve 5 small rural hospitals. During those years he actively participated on the Surgical Pathology Committee of the College of American Pathologists, writing a number of exercises for the Quality Assurance program. Dr. Jones ended his career in pathology as a professor at the University of North Carolina Hospitals from 2003 to 2015. During those years he attempted to reflect the best taken from the life of Sir William Osler. Like most of us, he often fell short of the mark. The most rewarding moments of his career include appreciations from colleagues, patients and their families, co-workers in the laboratory, and perhaps most of all: standing rounds of applause from medical students in his lab sessions at the end of each of his years teaching at the University of North Carolina. Like Dr. Osler, he hopes those who knew him will say that his mistakes were of the head, not of the heart.
