  • Giselle Ricur, M.D., is an ophthalmologist and digital health specialist. Ricur joined Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (BPEI) as the Executive Director of Virtual Care. With expertise in the design and implementation of hybrid models for telemedicine, she is focused on enhancing care and optimum outcomes for Bascom Palmer patients using the latest information and communication technologies as well as the most innovative digital tools in virtual healthcare. Recent work focuses on the creation of BPEI digital twins and ophthalmic equipment to facilitate learning in the metaverse.

    Ricur received her medical degree from the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo in Argentina and completed ophthalmology and residency training in Argentina. She then completed numerous ophthalmology observerships at various institutes in Argentina and the United States, including one in cornea at Bascom Palmer. She obtained her medical license in Argentina and Spain and then transitioned into the health informatics field, subsequently training at U.S.-based telemedicine programs. While in Argentina, she earned an executive master's degree in business and a master of science degree in healthcare management. Currently, she is a Ph.D. candidate in science and technology.

    Affiliated with the Zaldivar Institute, a highly respected eye institute in Argentina for more than 25 years, she served as director of their education, research and development department, as well as their director of telemedicine. She founded the Institute’s teleophthalmology program, and helped to implement and enhance their national and international patient outreach. Additionally, she founded the first international chapter of the American Telemedicine Association (ATA). She has published peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters and is an invited lecturer throughout the Latin American region. In 2020, she was inducted into the ATA’s College of Fellows for services and contributions to the field of telemedicine and eHealth.
