Summary
- Dr. Georgios Christakopoulos is a pediatric hematologist/oncologist in Memphis, TN and is affiliated with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
I am currently an Instructor in the Department of Pediatric Hematology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with 80% of my FTE allocated to research. My research efforts are focusing on developing novel gene editing therapeutic strategies to induce fetal hemoglobin via recreation of Hereditary Persistence of Fetal Hemoglobin (HPFH) variants in the γ-globin promoter of autologous β-thalassemia patient HSCs. Moreover, I am investigating the role of ULK1-dependent non-canonical autophagy in the clearance of toxic free α-globin in β-thalassemia and how we can stimulate this pathway pharmacologically.
