Summary
- Dr. Muschler's clinical practice is specialized in adult reconstructive surgery of the hip and knee. He is exceptionally skilled in: assessment of arthritic conditions of the hip and knee, hip and knee replacement, revision of hip and knee replacement due to pain, loosening or instability; and in regenerative medicine approaches to the hip and knee preservation.
He has an exceptional bedside manner. Patients are people, whose problems come first.
Dr. Muschler is an Orthopaedic Surgeon and a Clinician-Scientist at the Cleveland Clinic. Building upon an MD from Northwestern, a residency at UT Southwestern, and fellowships in musculoskeletal oncology and metabolic bone disease at the Hospital for Special Surgery and Memorial Sloan Kettering in NY (1986-1988), Dr. Muschler evolved into an equally balanced clinical and research career that integrates adult reconstructive surgery, treatment of fracture non-union, and cartilage repair with research focusing on adult stem and progenitor cell biology, quantitative clinical diagnostics, aging, gender variation, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. His laboratory has earned continuous federal funding for 18 years.
As an institutional leader, Dr. Muschler served as Vice Chair of the Cleveland Clinic Department of Bioengineering (2004-2013); Director, Orthopaedic Research Center (2005-2013, embracing musculoskeletal research across 13 departments); and as Vice Chair, Orthopaedic and Rheumatologic Institute (2007-2013).
As an inter-institutional leader, Dr. Muschler founded and led the translational Ohio-based Clinical Tissue Engineering Center (2005-2012). He also served as the founding Co-Director of the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine (AFIRM) (2008-2011), funded by the Department of Defense and dedicated to the accelerated development of therapies for war injuries. In addition to 27 years of clinical trainees, Dr. Muschler has mentored over 29 research post-docs and graduate students.
