Summary

  • I am a physician scientist with specialty training in pediatrics and subspecialty training in pediatric infectious diseases, pediatric gastroenterology, and pediatric nutrition. I joined LSU School of Medicine in 1986, was on faculty at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences from 2001-2015, and joined the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in 2015. I was seconded and in residence at research institutes in Thailand and Bangladesh for a 10 yr continuous period from 1992-2001. My areas of expertise include nutrition, low birth weight, diarrheal disease, and infection including the therapeutic and preventive interactions between micronutrients and infectious disease (diarrheal disease, pneumonia), malnutrition, and low birth weight. I have experience both as an investigator and director of programs in child and maternal health and nutrition, clinical case management, community-based public health, program monitoring and evaluation, and operations and programmatic research. I have related to child and maternal health as well as nutrition policy through involvement with global health organizations including WHO, World Bank, USAID, UNICEF, and others. I started a 6 year term in 2017 on the AAP, Committee on Nutrition. My work has been performed principally in Southeast Asia, South Asia, Latin America, and United States. In June of 2015, I initiated an effectiveness trial that was completed in Nov. 2019 in the Bangladesh urban and rural health care systems on daycare management of children with pneumonia and malnutrition. My current research focus includes clinical trials of SARS-CoV-2vaccine trials in children and interventions for phenylketonuria.
