Summary
- Gary Rhule is a physician and author of Sailing on Broken Pieces: Essential Survival Skills for Recovery from Mental Illness which offers personal insight to maneuvering the maze of emergency medicine and the health care system, and coping strategies to families living in recovery from mental illness. As a family advocate for mental health, he believes that 1) families need to know they are not alone, 2) that they need not suffer in silence, and 3) that professional help and resources are available in their communities.
Trained as a physician in Internal Medicine, he has worked in emergency medicine, community medicine, managed care, and in health care consulting. As a health care consultant he specializes in strategy, business development, quality and compliance. He has an interest in family advocacy in mental health care, health policy and equity, and cultural competency in health care. He has volunteered or worked in medical missions in Portland and Kingston, Jamaica; Grenada; Port-au-Prince, Haiti; Georgetown, Guyana; and Harare, Zimbabwe. As a result, he has a broad perspective in health care gained by personal, academic, and professional experience. Moreover, he understands the complexity of the cultural context in which health care is delivered, and the need for innovation to bridge gaps in physical and mental health care.
A graduate of Amherst College, Massachusetts, and the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, New York, he also holds a Masters in Public Health in Healthcare Policy from the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, and a MBA in Finance and Healthcare Management from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
