Summary
- Graduating from Colgate University in 1971, I received my MD from SUNY Upstate Medical Center in 1975. Interning in pediatrics at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, I had my ophthalmology residency, chief residency, and vitreoretinal fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. Board-certified in Ophthalmology in 1980, I received an MBA degree in Strategic Management from Saint Joseph’s University’s in 1998.
A practitioner at Wills and Professor of Ophthalmology at Jefferson Medical University, I was Director of the Retina Service at Wills from 2003-2012. I am currently Chief Medical Officer and Director of Pharmacoeconomics at the Center for Value-Based Medicine®, a healthcare economic research organization.
It has been my privilege to author 12 textbooks and over 700 writings on healthcare economics and vitreoretinal diseases. An investigator for multiple NIH clinical trials, I have had the privilege of giving over 450 lectures and am a reviewer for 40 peer-reviewed journals. Former President of the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology, the Philadelphia Ophthalmic Club, and the Wills Hospital Society, I was a founder and Co-chief Editor of the Lippincott’s Evidence-Based Ophthalmology.
Former Chairman of the Board of the Pennsylvania Physician Healthcare Plan, a PPO/HMO, and co-founder of the Value-Based Medicine concept, I am confident the latter’s patient/physician information systems will enhance U.S. medical care quality and cost-effectiveness.
It has been my good fortune to receive the American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor, Senior Honor and Lifetime Achievement Awards, the Arnall Patz Medal, Robert Shoemaker Award, and the Paul Craig Award. I have been honored to be in Who’s Who in the World, 1,000 Great Minds of the 21st Century, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine, Who’s Who Among Outstanding Business Executives, Top Ophthalmologists in the US, Philadelphia’s Top Doctors and Castle Connolly’s America’s Best Doctors.
