Summary

  • PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY :
    •    First correctly predictive pharmacophore for opioid peptides binding to the mu opioid receptor.
    •    First human muscle disorder cloned and chromosomally mapped (glycogen phosphorylase, McArdles Disease).
    •    Demonstration of an acquired metabolic myopathy of glycogenolysis of fast twitch skeletal muscle following nerve regeneration. Metabolic myopathy explains clinically observed rhabdomyolysis in high intensity muscular activity.
    •    Identified that neural activity in fast-twitch skeletal muscle alters metabolic gene expression by regulating their transcript stability via calcium flux of the sarcoplasmic reticulum
    •    Designed, co-developed, and implemented a JAVA software tool that generates neuroanatomical metadata indexing and reconciling the names of thalamic structures from different mammalian species. A novel, concept-based vector space model (VSM) employed automated relevance feedback adapted from genomic sequence alignment algorithms. The categorized metadata was applied to archive and retrieve semi-structured graphical neuroscientific information as part of the NIH-funded Human Brain Project.
    •    Identified a new class of anti-cancer small molecules that cause a previously unreported form of programmed necrosis in proliferating and non-proliferating, hypoxically transformed cancer initiator cells (CICs). Patented by University of California, these small molecules kill independently of cell cycle by initiating selective endosomal mis-trafficking.
    * New class of small molecules that inhibit nitric oxide release from macrophages and microglia
    •    As Chairperson, implemented first Telestroke and TeleNeurology programs in the UC Davis Health System. TeleNeurology outreach includes public health initiatives with Central Valley hospital facilities.
