Summary
- "Dr. Freddy was born in the Brighton Beach neighborhood of Brooklyn NY about a year after the Japanese Empire invaded Pearl Harbor. My Dad was born in Carbondale PA in 1892 and fought in WWI receiving a Bronze Star and several purple hearts for valor. My Mom was born in 1918 in Brooklyn New York surviving the Original Flu Pandemic-She was the valedictorian in
High School and Finishing School in Secretarial Sciences at the Katherine Woods Academy and became a paralegal. She met my dad whose attorney worked in the Empire State building, and they married February 1, 1942, I followed nine and a half months later. He was 26 years older than my mom.
After a grueling examination, I was accepted to the Brooklyn Technical High School majoring in chemistry. Prior to college as a Chem E student at the NYU Polytechnic Institute, I interned in Philadelphia for the Allied Chemical Corporation. I switched majors to pure chemistry at Brooklyn College at night as I worked days as a research and Development Chemist at the Squibb Pharmaceutical corporation to support my family. I had to switch to day school as some advanced courses were not taught at night. As a senior, I had a federal grant from the National Institutes of Health in liquid-gas chromatography researching new anti-cancer drugs.
As a recipient of departmental honors in Chemistry and Biology I was accepted at the University of Louisville School of Medicine on a trumpet scholarship-I played third trumpet in the Louisville Philharmonic and all the teams pep bands and four Kentucky Derbys. The first trumpet teacher for me and my brother Paul was our dad. Paul had a music scholarship to the Julliard Institute then in Harlem, now in Lincoln Center. Pauly Cohen played twenty years with Louis Armstrong as lead trumpet, he served another twenty years with Count Basie as lead trumpet and arranger. Paul slept in the same hotels as the rest of the band as black folks could not dwell in the same hotel during segregation.
