Summary
- I am a retired internist, practicing primary care during the first 25 years (in both office and hospital); then hospital palliative care for 5 years; then hospital bioethics consultation, mediation and teaching for 5 years. In 2021, I designed and launched a virtual elective for 4th year med students to study the historical and social-economic contributors to the large disparity in Covid incidence between poorer communities in Nassau County, L.I., whose residents were predominantly Black and Hispanic compared to those that were wealthier and mainly White. For example, the village of Hempstead (where most residents are people of color, with relatively low median income) had 3 times the incidence of Covid infections in 2020 compared to the directly adjacent Village of Garden City whose residents were mostly White, wealthy and highly educated. Having moved from LI to MA and retained an Adjunct teaching title at ZSOM, I continue to help mentor these students - virtually, via Zoom.
