Her experience is diverse and covers the wide range of activities in private sector and federal health sector; this experience results in a unique ability to understand the global picture while being expert and knowledgeable about technical details in a rapidly evolving environment.
Dr. Murphy had 20 year career working in the Department of Veterans Affairs at VA medical centers doing neurologic care, research and education as well as in VA Central Office as a senior executive. She served as the Deputy Under Secretary for Health (DUSH) for Health Policy Coordination from 2002 – 2006 and as the Principle DUSH from 1999-2002. As (Principal) Deputy Under Secretary for Health, Dr. Murphy served as the Chief Operating Officer of the Veterans Health Administration’s national, integrated health system which was recognized to deliver “The Best Care Anywhere”. In this capacity, she managed a $25 billion dollar budget and over 200,000 employees; her key responsibilities included budget and policy formulation; strategic planning; organizational change and transformation; quality and performance measurement; and management of the health care, research, education and emergency management missions of VHA.
