Summary
- Dr. Imam is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Neonatology at the University of California, San Diego. He specializes in the care of critically ill premature and term infants and is Board-Certified in Pediatrics and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.
Dr. Imam’s research aims to identify and study genes that protect key organs such as the developing brain from low oxygen stress (hypoxia), a major cause of cerebral palsy and seizure disorders. His laboratory couples genome-wide techniques with model organism studies in the zebrafish and mouse to discover novel therapies for high-risk human newborns to prevent irreversible brain injury.
Previously, Dr. Imam attended Stanford University for his undergraduate, medical, and scientific training, where he obtained his PhD in Biochemistry with Dr. Mark Krasnow. During his graduate work, Dr. Imam used traditional single-gene methods in concert with genome-wide studies he helped innovate to study large-scale gene regulation during development and organogenesis. He subsequently moved to Harvard for his Residency in Pediatrics and Fellowship in Neonatology. Dr. Imam’s work has resulted in multiple high-profile scientific publications in journals including Science, Cell, Genetics, and Nature.
