Summary

  • I am a board certified pediatrician, pediatric neurologist, and newborn intensivist. I also have PhD in neuroscience and am a stem cell biologist. As a physician-scientist, I was trained and was on faculty at Children's Hospital-Boston (where I also ran a lab) until 2003 and was then recruited as professor to the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute (SBP) & UCSD. I am the Founding Director of the Center for Stem Cells & Regenerative Medicine and of the Stem Cell Research Center & Core Facility. I also direct the Stem Cell Training Program. I was elected to the Association of American Physicians & to the American Institute of Medical & Biological Engineering.
