- Dr. Newman is the Section Head of Pediatric Surgery and Surgical Director of the Mott Solid Tumor Oncology Program. She completed undergraduate work and medical school at Georgetown University in 2001. Dr. Newman completed General Surgery training at The University of Michigan and Fellowship training at The University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital. Dr. Newman is certified by the American Board of Surgery in both Pediatrics and General Surgery.
She is an active member of the Children's Oncology Group, the American Pediatric Surgical Association, the Society of Black Academic Surgeons, and the Association for Academic Surgery. Dr. Newman is also committed to innovating new strategies for faculty excellence and advancement in clinical care, research, education, and strategizing organizational changes that allow all individuals an equal and inclusive opportunity to achieve excellence. She is the Associate Director for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Justice for the Rogel Cancer Center at Michigan Medicine.
Clinical Specialization: Dr. Newman's practice includes all areas of general pediatric surgery and pediatric diseases of the neck, chest, and abdomen. Her clinical areas of specific interest are pediatric surgical oncology including neuroblastoma, Wilm's tumor, and soft tissue sarcoma. Dr. Newman is also interested in surgical diseases of the biliary tract including liver tumors and biliary atresia.
Dr. Newman, who joined the U-M faculty in 2010, focuses her career, both clinically and in the basic science laboratory, on finding innovative treatments for children with high-risk neuroblastoma. Her lab recently discovered that neuroblastoma cells utilize a non-cannonical DNA repair pathway as a mechanism of tumor cell survival. Dr. Newman and her team are actively engaged in preclinical drug development and are currently collaborating on designing a series of highly promising small-molecules targeting aberrant DNA repair mechanisms in resistant neuroblastoma a
