Summary
- Dr. Eli J. Kleinman began his career as a Police Surgeon with the NYPD in 1986. A Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and Hematology, Dr. Kleinman has excelled as a clinical practitioner and teacher, and was named Chief Surgeon in 2003. In his capacity as Chief Surgeon, Dr. Kleinman oversees all of the medical activities undertaken by the NYPD and advises the Police Commissioner and the Chief of Personnel on medical policy and preparedness issues affecting the Department. He also supervises the activities of the NYPD Police Surgeons and acts as a medical advisor to the trustees of the Police Pension Fund and the Police Relief Fund.
Dr. Kleinman received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Wayne State University in Michigan in 1977. His medical training since has included Internship at Kings County Hospital/SUNY Downstate Medical Center, Internal Medicine Residency and Hematology Fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center, as well as a National Institutes of Health Fellowship in Thrombosis and Hemostasis. He has held academic and clinical appointments at some of the city's most distinguished medical institutions, serving as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Clinical Instructor of Medicine at the Mount Sinai Hospital, Deputy Director of Hematology at North Central Bronx Hospital, Attending Hematologist at the Bronx VA Medical Center and Consultant to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. He has written and lectured on Medical Ethics and was elected a Fellow in the American College of Physicians in 1991. He received Departmental recognition for his actions on 9/11, where he sustained serious injuries during the World Trade Center collapse while assisting with rescue efforts at Ground Zero and published landmark papers on WTC Pulmonary disease, and NYPD Cancers.
Dr. Kleinman is designated as an NYPD Master Linguist, and earned an MPH degree from Columbia University.
