Summary
- As Medical Director of the UCSF Clinical Laboratories, I am responsible for the overall quality management of our pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes. This includes oversight of all clinical laboratory sections, as well as inpatient and outpatient point of care testing and phlebotomy services. The construction of our new Mission Bay campus has given me the unique opportunity to help build a clinical laboratory from the ground up. I have had the pleasure of being involved in both design and construction of the laboratory, as well as operational and transitional planning. These efforts resulted in the successful licensing (CA state and CLIA) of the laboratory in November, 2014.
In response to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, I also have co-directed the construction of a bio-isolation laboratory as part of a containment unit that can care for potential Ebola patients, as well as other patients suffering from highly infectious diseases. I have overseen design, instrumentation, and operational issues and have worked closely with other departments (e.g. Critical Care) in the overall operation of this bio-containment ward.
In addition, as a board certified hematopathologist, I attend on the UCSF hematopathology and flow cytometry services, where I specialize in the diagnosis of leukemias and lymphomas. I also take great pleasure in teaching our residents and fellows.
