Summary

  • As executive medical director and chairman of the board for the Southern California Permanente Medical Group (SCPMG), I am honored to be part of the movement in our country to transform health care.

Through Permanente Medicine, we provide care that is:

    •    Patient-centered,
    •    Evidence-based,
    •    Physician-led,
    •    Culturally-responsive,
    •    Technology-enabled,
    •    Team-delivered.

As a leader, I strive to create a high-performing culture that is collaborative, collegial, transparent, and accountable. In my view, culture trumps structure every time. A strong cultural value system helps people make the right decisions. Research shows that health care organizations with a strong culture have better health outcomes.

I am excited to be a part of the team establishing the Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine, scheduled to open in 2019. This initiative is part of our organization’s ongoing effort to lead in meeting America’s demands for 21st-century health care. Extending the innovation of the Kaiser Permanente approach to patient health and care, the school will redesign physician education around strategic pillars that include providing high-quality care beyond traditional medical settings, acknowledging the central importance of collaboration, and teamwork and social determinants of care to inform treatment decisions, and addressing disparities in health.

A recent career highlight was serving on the board of directors of the organizing committee that brought the Special Olympics World Games to Southern California in the summer of 2015. Together with more than 650 other Permanente physicians, we provided medical care to the 6,500 athletes throughout the games. Being involved with the Special Olympics World Games was a tremendous honor, for me personally, as well as for the physicians of the Southern California Permanente Medical Group.
