- Edward R. Ashwood, MD, is a Tenured Professor of Pathology, former vice-chair of Clinical Pathology, University of Colorado Anschutz, and former Medical Director of Clinical Laboratories, University of Colorado Hospital, and current medical director of Cherry Creek Medical Center clinical laboratory.
Dr. Ashwood received a B.S. with honors in chemical engineering in 1975 and a M.D. in 1979, both from University of Colorado. He completed a clinical pathology residency at the University of Washington in 1982, serving as chief resident in 1980. He is board certified in Clinical Pathology and holds a subspecialty certificate in Chemical Pathology. Dr. Ashwood moved to Utah in 1985 after accepting a position at the University of Utah (UU) and ARUP Laboratories (a reference clinical laboratory owned by UU). For the Department of Pathology, he served as the Pathology Residency Director for 8 years. At ARUP, Dr. Ashwood served as Medical Director of several clinical chemistry laboratories. He headed the Chemistry Division for 14 years, and was Chief Medical Officer and Laboratory Director for 8 years. He served as ARUP President and CEO from 2009 to 2015. In March 2016, he retired from ARUP/UU to accept his current faculty position at CU Anschutz.
Dr. Ashwood has received the American Association for Clinical Chemistry outstanding speaker award eleven times and three prestigious AACC national awards: Outstanding Contributions in Pediatric Clinical Chemistry, Outstanding Contributions in Education, and Outstanding Lifetime Achievement in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine. He is a past president of the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists (ACLPS), receiving a Young Investigator Award in 1982 and the ACLPS Evans award in 1998. The College of American Pathologists honored him in 2022 with their Lifetime Achievement Award.
