Previously, he served as the Deputy Chief of Staff at the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System in Nashville, TN; Associate Clinical Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Public Health in the Department of Medicine; and Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

    He received his medical degree from Medical College of Georgia, later completing a fellowship in medical informatics, general internal medicine, and health services research at the University of Utah and Salt Lake City VA Medical Center, where he also received a master's degree in public health. He is an internist with nationally recognized expertise in quality of care and patient safety, evidence-based medicine, guideline development, clinical informatics, health services research, and public health.
