Summary
- Dr. Edison de Mello, a native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, embarked on his transformative journey into integrative medicine under the nurturing guidance of his grandmother, Nana, a natural healer. Witnessing her compassionate care and healing techniques, he developed a profound passion for healthcare. This early exposure set the stage for his exceptional career.
In 1982, Dr. de Mello graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of North Texas and pursued an MA in Psychology and a doctoral degree in Health and Human Services/Psychology. During his master's, he co-authored a significant Head Start program funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, titled “Strengthening Head Start Families through Mental Health Intervention.”
Driven by a deep fascination with the biopsychosocial aspects of gastrointestinal disease, a theme he explored in his doctoral dissertation” Gut Feelings,” Dr. de Mello entered Ross University School of Medicine in 1991, completing his clinical rotations at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine affiliated hospitals.
Furthering his commitment, Dr. de Mello, in 199, entered residency at the renowned Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center Urban Family Residency In New York City, including training at the Center for Health and Healing in Manhattan. His residency incorporated a biopsychosocial model, offering innovative experiences integrating complementary medicine into Family Medicine practice.
Upon completing his medical training, Dr. de Mello founded the Akasha Center for Integrative Medicine. Envisioned as a "healing sanctuary," The Center is a testament to Dr. de Mello's unwavering commitment to integrative medicine. Intricately addresses the interplay of mind, body, and spirit in the treatment and prevention of disease.
" I meet my patient before I meet their dis-ease", summarizes his approach to healthcare.
