Summary

  • I am the Endowed Professor and Director of the Center for Advanced Research Training and Innovation (CARTI) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, professor in the departments of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. I am also former Executive Vice President at the University of Maryland and Dean Emeritus of the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Along with a senior investigator colleague, I lead an NIH-funded research laboratory group that studies the biomolecular mechanisms of diabetes-induced birth defects. We have identified and patented key molecular mechanistic intermediates and have found numerous signaling pathways, oxidative and ER stress, epigenetics and premature aging all contribute to the etiology. I am also part of a team that many years ago developed the technique of embryofetoscopy for early prenatal diagnosis and eventualy for use in curative fetal therapy.
