Research History

  • Research in Hospital Disaster ResponseMy ongoing research centers on hospital response to disasters and mass effect incidents. Current projects focus on strategies to increase hospital surge capacity, forward-planning in an all-hazards approach, and developing no-train protocols for use by hospitalists.2020 - Present
  • Resident Physician Research in Hospital Disaster ResponseMy residency research centers on hospital response to disasters and mass effect incidents. Work focuses on the integration of Hospital Medicine into the Hospital Incident Command System, and the development of protocols for use by hospitalists that increase hospital surge capacity.2017 - 2020
  • Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, Laboratory of Dr. Richard C. Boucher, Moeser Eminent Professor of MedicineThe goal of this research was to optimize a permeable, microfabricated device for growth of alveolar type 1 pneumocytes for ion transport studies. Using UV photolithography, a permeable microdevice patterned at the microscale was constructed and tested for compatibility with AT1 cells.2014 - 2015
  • Doctoral Research in Pharmacology and Biomedical Engineering Laboratory of Dr. Nancy Allbritton, Kenan and Debreczeny Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, and PharmacologyMy doctoral research encompassed the design, implementation, and optimization of microfabricated platforms for studying cellular heterogeneity. This work resulted in two first-author peer-reviewed publications, as well as two reviews describing recent advances in synthetic microfabricated devices.2010 - 2014
  • NIH Postbaccalaureate Research Training Fellow, Laboratory of Respiratory Biology, NIEHSMy post-baccalaureate work involved a multidisciplinary approach to analyze bronchial cell cycle arrest by respiratory syncytial virus. These efforts resulted in a second-author peer-reviewed publication.2007 - 2008
  • Undergraduate Research in Structural Biology, Laboratory of Dr. Matthew Redinbo, Kenan Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, Biochemistry and MicrobiologyMy undergraduate research dealt with the structural biology of hLRH-1 and an ancestral steroid hormone receptor with affinity for both glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. This resulted in a high-impact publication in the journal Science, and was the subject of my undergraduate honors thesis.2005 - 2007
  • Undergraduate Research in Airway Epithelial Paracrine Signaling, Carolina Cystic Fibrosis Research and Treatment CenterThe goal of this research project was to use biochemical and liquid chromatographic approaches to study the metabolism and uptake of purine nucleotides and nucleosides by cultured human bronchial epithelial cell lines. It became the subject for a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship.2004 - 2005
