He completed his medical education at Duke University School of Medicine followed by a residency in surgery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center from 2009 to 2015. After practicing for a year as a general surgeon at Naval Hospital Bremerton and aboard the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis on a Western Pacific deployment, he pursued fellowships in pediatric surgery and pediatric surgical oncology at the University of Tennessee and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. His previous employment includes positions as a pediatric surgeon at Naval Medical Center San Diego, UCLA, and Kaiser Permanente San Diego. His research interests include surgical oncology, spontaneous pneumothorax, biliary dyskinesia, and systematic reviews in pediatric populations.
Dr. Lucas continues to serve in the U.S. Navy Reserve as a general surgeon in the 4th Medical Battalion, 4th Marine Logistics Group, United States Marine Corps.
