Summary

  • I naturally have a high energy level. Having started out penniless and attending college and medical school on scholarships and limited savings I completed medical education at Baylor College of Medicine in 3 years then I completed my orthopaedic residency that emphasized knee & hip total joint and arthroscopic reconstruction and trauma. I supplemented that education with a unique hands-on upper extremity fellowship. I then rejuvenated a disabled orthopaedist's spine and total joint practice in Arizona. I sold this and I set up a 2 location general ortho practice in Santa Cruz Co. CA. I was involved in one of the state's first ASCs as the highest producer. 8 years of that and I moved to the nation's heartland, Nebraska. I 1/2 years into a failed partnership with a sociopath doing spine and total joints and everything else (170 patients operated upon per month combined) I re-established myself as a solo general orthopaedist subspecializing in the upper extremity out of 4 locations across the state. Obamacare resulted in reducing to 3 offices. Home base is Grand Island. Satellites are Lincoln and Omaha. I am among only a very few orthopaedists nationally skilled in nerve conduction studies and utilize that extensively in patient management. I have written over 15 custom patient brochures, set up one of the first and most complete ortho websites in 1999 and after 5 versions revamped it again in 2022 into a subspecialty site. I remain active in clinical research. Meanwhile since 2006 I have been partnered in an Omaha ASC with a larger ortho group. There I was the 3rd largest producer for the first 10 years despite 3 offices 300, 150 and 50 miles away!

I maintain a huge patient outcome database for outcomes research. In fact, probably the only one in Nebraska.

Research History

  • Denervation of the Thumb Metacarpal-phalangeal Joint in the Presence of Gross InstabilityThumb CMC joint denervation is a very useful and almost painless technique for eliminating most or all of the pain in presence of arthritis. Instability of a joint has been argued, without data as a contraindication for this procedure. So far this group actually best treated this way.2018 - Present
  • Establishing Criteria for Diagnosis and Management of Ulnar Nerve Entrapment using Pressure Specified Sensory DeiceUntil now, there really has been no good way to discern progress, know when to call it quits, or not offer non-operative management of cubital tunnel, let alone make the diagnosis. Over 50% of cases have a normal NCS, while PSSD helps diagnose these otherwise elusive cases.2002 - Present
  • Non vascularized fingertip replantationEstablishing a protocol for salvaging amputated fingertips traditionally converted to revised amputation1997 - Present
  • Retrograde Neck & Shoulder Pain from Median and/or Ulnar Nerve EntrapmentThis phenomenon appears to occur as the presenting symptom in about 10% of atypical CTS and Cubital tunnel patients. The examiner must thoroughly evaluate each neck or shoulder pain patient including NCS and PSSD for this atypical cause of the discomfort.1990 - Present
  • Percutaneus wrist denervation using RFLGTechnique of percutaneously partially denervating wrists essentially painlessly and without any down time. Based on Wilhelm and A.Lee Dellon's and others work on wrist denervation. Technique to appear in Medtigo.com1988 - Present
