Summary
- I conducted basic neuroscience and translational research for nearly a decade and was lead author on articles featured in Journal of Neuroscience, Experimental Neurology, Neuroscientist, Biological Psychiatry, International Journal of Developmental Neuroscience, Journal of Neurochemistry with 450+ citations during an NIH post-doctoral fellowship in molecular neuroscience and genetics under Dr. Flora Vaccarino, Director of the Program in Neurodevelopment and Regeneration at Yale University. Supported by a P01 Program Project, funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, we identified the mechanisms responsible for functional recovery following perinatal hypoxia. In a groundbreaking study, we were the first to prove the existence of postnatal cortical neurogenesis and show how the brain can regenerate neuronal losses from neonatal injury, explaining why the brains of premature children improve over time. Subsequent studies showed environmental enrichment increased neural stem cell proliferation and reversed cognitive deficits associated with hypoxic-ischemic injury. I also completed an NIMH post-doctoral T32 Training Program in childhood neuropsychiatric disorders under Dr. James Leckman, Director of Research at Yale Child Study Center.
I received my medical degree from Yale Medical School and did a transitional-year internship in Internal Medicine at Bridgeport Hospital under Dr. Gregory Buller, Chief of Medicine at UCSF Fresno. I served on the ethics committee, presented at morbidity and mortality conferences, participated in multi-disciplinary root cause investigations, and wrote case reports involving patients misdiagnosed due to rare conditions or unexplained causes. I received a "Great Catch" for diagnosing three patients with Levamisole-Induced Necrosis Syndrome from ingestion of tainted cocaine and was the first to identify and report, propylene glycol in Fireball Whiskey as the causative agent in a case of severe lactic acidosis.
