- With over 200 peer-reviewed publications, 27 years as a NIH-funded PI, and membership in the National Academy of Medicine, Dr. Schwinn is an experienced leader of complex organizations. As Dean of Medicine at the University of Iowa, she had oversight of research, education, and the clinical physician practice plan ($700M overall budget). Successful fundraiser as evidenced by state/federal appropriations and philanthropy, including serving as a key institutional lead during achievement of $500 million goal in campaign fundraising ($20M direct contribution/asks). Prior to this, 15 years of sustained and expanding administrative experience occurred starting with Endowed Professor & Vice Chair of Anesthesiology and Director of the 3rd (research) year medical school curriculum at Duke University. She was Chair of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine at the University of Washington when the department doubled in size and moved from #22 in NIH funding to top 5 during her 5 years as Chair. Most recently she was Associate VP for Medical Affairs at UI Health Care and Chair of a National Academies of Science, Engineering & Medicine FDA-sponsored scientific report committee in Washington DC. In May 2020, Dr. Schwinn became President of Palm Beach Atlantic University, a Christian liberal arts university in West Palm Beach, Florida. As a liberal arts college graduate, Dr. Schwinn is passionate about ensuring quality university education thrives over next decade of “perfect storm” for higher education institutions.
