Summary

  • I am a Board Certified General Surgeon, Fellowship Trained in Burns, Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Medicine, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a past Associate Professor in the Trauma Service of the Department of Surgery, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.

For most of my surgical career I have worked in a rural setting, most recently in the heart of Amish country in rural southern Indiana as 1 of 2 general surgeons providing bread and butter surgical services for the local hospital. Up until July of 2014, I was employed at a rural regional hospital in the mountains of western North Carolina. Prior to my hospital employment there, I had been in solo practice for 12 years as the only general surgeon for 2 counties in the mountains of western North Carolina, with an approximate service area of 35,000.

Over the past 24 years, I have accomplished a very well rounded scope of general surgery experience. I consistently maintain a high level of ongoing CME activities to stay at the forefront of my general surgery profession.
I have routinely performed most all general surgical procedures including, Laparoscopy, Endoscopy, (colonoscopy and EGD), colon and colon cancer surgeries. Liver, spleen, small intestine, gallbladder, appendectomy, rectal and anal, hemorrhoids. Surgical Critical Care, Trauma, Burns, skin grafts, melanoma, skin cancer and skin lesions, cryotherapy, sclerotherapy, and comprehensive wound care. Breast surgery including stereotactic breast biopsy, sentinel lymph node biopsy, ultrasound, mastectomy, lumpectomy, tubal ligation and vasectomy. In addition to “bread and butter” general surgery, I have a special interest in Abdominal Wall Reconstruction, Hernia and Complex Hernia Repair.
