Summary

  • David L. Perez MD, MMSc, a dual-trained neurologist-psychiatrist, is a faculty member in the Departments of Neurology and Psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Perez is the Founding Director of the multidisciplinary Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) Unit. The FND Unit includes neurologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, neuropsychologists, and research scientists. In the MGH outpatient FND Clinical Program, specialized, integrated neurologic and psychiatric consultations are provided for patients experiencing FND, including individuals with functional/dissociative seizures, functional movement disorder, functional limb weakness, functional cognitive disorder and persistent postural perceptual dizziness.

    Dr. Perez is also the Director of the MGH Functional Neurological Disorder Research Program, which is dedicated to the comprehensive clinical and neurobiological investigation of FND. Currently, the laboratory uses neuropsychiatric research assessments and advanced structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques to investigate clinical and neurobiological markers of symptom severity, disease-risk, subtype and clinical outcomes across individuals with functional seizures, functional movement disorder and functional limb weakness.

    Dr. Perez is affiliated with the MGH/HST Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, and collaborates with other investigators within the Harvard Medical School Hospital system. Dr. Perez is a member of the Cognitive Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry Divisions at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
