- David A Johnson MD MACG FASGE MACP, is Professor of Medicine and Chief of Gastroenterology at Eastern VA School of Medicine. Despite his primary focus on the clinical practice of gastroenterology, he has published extensively in the internal medicine/gastroenterology literature, contributing over 700 articles/chapters/invited reviews and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals and edited/co-edited 7 books most recently- 2023 “Esophageal Disease and the Role of the Microbiome” (first book on this topic). Areas of expertise are: GERD, gut microbiome, sleep disorders, CRC screening. Past governor and president of the American College of Gastroenterology Chair of ACG Quality Council Task Force, Treasurer of the ACG/ASGE GI Quality Improvement Consortium, co-chair ACG National Fellows conference (17yrs) American Board of Internal Medicine (Gastroenterology) Board of Examiners (2012-2017) . 2000-2018, he served on both the GI Multi-Society CRC Screening Task Force and ACG guidelines committee for CRC screening and has co-authored national guidelines(17 total), member Centers of Disease Control Task Force quality colonoscopy., GI Technical advisor National Quality Forum. Past coeditor of Reviews in Gastroenterological Disorders, Journal Medicine, ACG Education Universe, section editor Am J Gastroenterol, NEJM Journal Watch (esophagus), Medscape GI (2011-present). He directed the first published study in the world on colonoscopy for CRC screening (1988) and was the physician who worked with VA State Senator Emily Couric to put through historic first legislation to mandate CRC screening with colonoscopy as preferred standard, setting model for other states which have followed with similar legislation.
